why is prison funny? true it is ironic that if you get in debt you have to pay said debt but how can you pay said debt while in prison? ha ha ha, assholes.

Answer: Many of these prisons were also workhouses, where men, women, and children worked for no pay, until the it was determined they had paid their debt. Or they died.
