Because he was orphaned at age 4 and all the nearby orphanages were too full to accept any more children. He ran away, feeling rejected and resorted to a life of crime. He got into a gang and met another girl in the gang. They soon liked each other but were separated when an operation went horribly wrong. He was the lone survivor, and he crossed the street to rid himself of his misery.
