The color orange used to be considered a shade of red. the fruit orange came first. one would say, "pass me that red fruit." "you mean the orange?" "yeah." but then they decided that orange was different from red, so they named the color after the fruit.

Yes, the other comments are right, the fruit was named "Orange" before the color was. Oh, and it was technically called "flavo-rumbrim"...I think. That's Latin for yellowred.
